Speeding in the village

Speeding on the streets of the village has been an issue and a hot topic for years.  Numerous councils have talked about how to address the issue of speeding and I have lost count as to how many posts I have seen in the Facebook page, Residents of The Village New Maryland about speeding on streets and the New Maryland Highway.  I have personally seen residents (young and mature) attempting to cross the highway and drivers not stopping when the crossing lights are flashing. I have experienced personally attempting to cross the New Maryland Highway at Crown seeing drivers actually speed up when the cross lights begin to flash.

Councils current and pass have decided the main solution to the speeding and safety of residents is to get out once a year stand at the end of subdivisions with signs reminding people to slow down.  Although commendable, the speeding issue and specifically safety is not a one day issue a year.  I believe a safety issue like not speeding must be instilled in residents, visitors or drivers passing through our village.  We are all guilty of speeding at one time or another and to be honest our streets are made to encourage speeding.  To instill this culture of safety, safety must be communicated regularly, consistently and there needs to be consistent enforcement.

There are a number of design techniques that must be investigated like roundabouts, speed humps, medians etc., that don’t have to break the bank and are cost effective.  I believe it is time for council to sit down with staff and have a serious conversation about speeding and safety in general on our streets and investigate what solutions are out there so we can finally address the issue of speeding and safety on our streets for everyone all year round.

I would like to hear from you about your ideas on how we can improve the safety of our streets. reach out to me by email newmaryland@gmail.com , text or call 506-470-2385.
